As of November 1st, one of the largest players in the electronic cigarette and vaping industry, V2 Cigs, has permanently closed its doors, leaving it’s customers searching for an alternative to V2 Cigs. This closure comes on the heels of a $75 million dollar acquisition from JUUL Labs earlier in October of 2018. According to a message on V2 Cigs website, the closure is a result of a new wave of tariffs passed by the current administration which caused profitability to plummet. Reports have shown that VMR, V2’s parent company, had reported losses that exceeded $25 million over the last few years.

Why Did JUUL Buy V2 Cigs?

Many in the vaping community, especially loyal V2 Cigs customers, are left scratching their head as to why this closure came so suddenly. The acquisition from JUUL Labs came fairly unexpectedly, but research from Vaping360 has helped to clarify the underlying purpose. JUUL Labs officially purchased VMR Products, the parent company of V2 Cigs, for a reported $75 million dollars. VMR Products are a subsidiary of Huabao International Holdings, a Hong-Kong company that has ownership of China’s largest e-cig flavoring manufacturer. Through a Huabao-owned company, they received approval from the Chinese State Tobacco Monopoly Administration to sell vapor products within the country.

With over 300 million smokers in China, the ability to sell e-cigarettes to this heavily restricted market appears to have been the driving force in JUUL Labs’ acquisition of V2 Cigs. As pressure from the FDA in the United States continue to keep JUUL’s future in limbo, purchasing and immediately closing V2 Cigs serves JUUL Labs both domestically and internationally. In the United States, the closure removes a major competitor of JUUL from the market, and in China, JUUL has now acquired the means to distribute their product in the largest market of smokers in the world.

What Happens to V2 Customers?
