Sure, you can find CBD products just about anywhere these days, from right here on the Internet to the gas station down the street, but not all are made with the best ingredients (or intentions). As a matter of fact, some of the available CBD products out there actually contain very little CBD, or are even completely fake – especially products found on sites like Amazon, which is now known for being loaded with counterfeit CBD products.

Another issue with the vast variety of CBD products available today is they’ve emerged in a somewhat unregulated industry, much like the vaping industry. This not only leaves plenty of room for fake CBD products, but also room for products made with dangerous ingredients. For example, the use of Vitamin E as a carrier oil in vaping products has been linked back to the mysterious lung illness of 2019, now known as EVALI for e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury.

With White Cloud Naturals, we’ve made delivering top-quality products, exceptional customer service and consumer education our top priorities so you can rest assured you’re buying the best CBD vape juice, and more. Formulated with phytocannabinoid-rich hemp extract and only the best ingredients, all White Cloud Naturals CBD products are made in the USA and tested by third-party labs for potency and contamination to ensure the highest quality is delivered in every batch.

Now, if you’re not quite sure what CBD is, where it comes from or how it’s used, then read on for a little CBD 101

What Exactly is CBD and Where Does it Come From?

Short for cannabidiol, CBD has become the star of a booming industry over the last few years, however, many are still confused by what it is, where it comes from and how it’s used. Just like it’s well-known cousin  tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC), CBD is one of the many active compounds found in the cannabis plant.

While THC is well-known for its intoxicating “high” effect, CBD is known for producing a calming effect, or even no psychological effect at all. While most associate this intoxicating effect with cannabis in general, there are actually two types of plants that produce both THC and CBD: hemp and marijuana.

Primarily grown for their fibers and seeds, hemp plants are classified as containing no more than 0.3 percent THC. while marijuana plants are classified as containing more than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive compound. So how do we know how THC and CBD react differently with the body? Science, of course!

CBD and the Human Body

How Does CBD Interact With the Human Body?

Also known as phytocannabinoids and often symply referred to as cannabinoids, CBD and its fellow active compounds interact with a physiological system found in humans and other living systems. This system is believed to play an important role in both establishing and maintaining human health, but it’s not exactly a system we all learned about in biology class.

In the 1980s, a couple of scientists conducting a government-funded study to prove the harmful effects of cannabis actually ended up making a significant discovery about the human body: our brains actually come equipped with receptors that interact with the cannabinoids of the cannabis plant.

A couple of years later, another team of researchers were mapping out the DNA sequence of these cannabinoid receptor sites when they discovered that the body actually produces its own cannabinoids. Termed  “endocannabinoids” for cannabinoids “within”, these small molecules are part of that physiological system mentioned earlier. That system is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)

What is the Role of CBD in the Endocannabinoid System?

endocannabinoid system receptors

From what the science has told us thus far, the ECS is made up of three key components that all work together to help establish and maintain health: cannabinoid receptors (CB receptors), endocannabinoids (eCBs) and metabolic enzymes.

The CB receptors sit on the surface of cells and “listen” to their surroundings to transmit information about the body’s changing conditions so they can activate the appropriate cellular response. So far, researchers have been able to identify two main cannabinoid receptors, simply named cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) which helps maintain a healthy functioning brain, and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) which helps regulate inflammation and the body’s immune response.

The eCBs are small molecules produced throughout the body that basically serve as the messengers to the ECS, activating cannabinoid receptors when needed. The role of the metabolic enzymes is to both synthesize the eCBs when needed and break them down once they’ve served their purpose.

When it comes to how CBD interacts with the ECS, it basically serves as the hall monitor, directing the other cannabinoids to where they need to be. Rather than binding to CB receptors like THC and other cannabinoids, CBD is believed to either block or limit the absorption of other cannabinoids to enhance the body’s ability to produce and absorb its own cannabinoids.

For example, prescription drugs used to treat mental ailments such as schizophrenia, Parkinson’s and depression are formulated with chemicals that bind to dopamine D2 receptors (D2R) to help alleviate symptoms, and CBD has been shown to assist in the binding process. Although more research is needed, CBD is also showing promise in offering a range of therapeutic benefits.

Are There Different Types of CBD?

full spectrum CBD
broad spectrum CBD
CBD isolate

If you’ve already explored the world of CBD, you may have noticed there are a few different types to choose from: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate. As implied, isolate refers to CBD that has been extracted and completely isolated from the other active compounds of the cannabis plant and is considered the purest form of CBD (around 99.9 percent, to be exact).

The term “full-spectrum” refers to CBD extract that contains all naturally-occurring phytocannabinoids of the cannabis plant, including trace levels of THC. When used together, these compounds are believed to produce what researchers have termed “the entourage effect”, which simply refers to the effectiveness of the cannabinoids working together. Although the levels of THC in full spectrum CBD oils and extracts are considered negligible, they can still result in a false positive drug test.

Just like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum CBD also contains all of the naturally occurring phytocannabinoids of the cannabis plant, however, all traces of THC have been completely removed. The remaining phytocannabinoids are also believed to produce the entourage effect, just without the THC and false positive drug test.

How is CBD Regulated?

Much like nicotine and tobacco, CBD’s association with cannabis comes with some negative views and confusing politics. When it comes to current regulations, CBD still falls under a grey area, despite its newly legal status under the Farm Bill of 2018 which removed hemp and other derivatives of cannabis from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), granted they contain no more than 0.3% THC.

With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, the FDA’s authority over hemp and cannabis was also preserved, which means CBD retailers are prohibited from marketing their products for therapeutic purposes without FDA approval. Sounds a lot like the vaping industry and the FDA’s infamous premarket tobacco applications (PMTAs), doesn’t it? But don’t worry White Cloud customers, our PMTA was submitted on time and has already been accepted – and you can read all about that interesting experience here.

Although it’s been a slow start, the FDA has actually approved one CBD-infused product for therapeutic purposes. Since its approval in 2018, Epidiolex has been used to treat seizures associated with two rare forms of severe epilepsy in patients two years of age and older, and has been further approved for treatment of seizures associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

Although regulations are inevitable and needed to ensure safe use, there are plenty of ways to explore the world of CBD – and you’ll find only the best at White Cloud Naturals
