Richard Brewer, who had puffed away for 35 years, was more methodical, spending some 250 hours reading information and reviews online before buying an e-cigarette.

For each, though, the result was quick and dramatic...

The current study, published in the journal Chest, provided 30 healthy non-smokers with e-cigarettes, the electronic devices that deliver a dose of nicotine in a vaporized liquid, thereby eliminating the dangerous combustion products of cigarette smoke. After five minutes of using an e-cigarette, the participants’ lungs showed signs of airway constriction and inflammation, researchers found.

“So what?” asks ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross.

In the past few years, the number of people using electronic cigarettes has quadrupled, but the smokeless cigarettes are facing some stern opposition...

The new gadgets let people get their nicotine fix in places where smoking is not allowed, and cartridges containing different amounts of nicotine can be purchased, so they can be used by smokers to wean themselves off the addictive chemical.

Dr. Marc Manley, chief prevention officer with Blue Cross Blue Shield, says nearly half of all smokers try to quit each year, but research shows less than 5 percent are able to break the addiction.

John Stossel's latest post: FDA Kills Smokers

"The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health."

That's what the Food and Drug Administration tells us on its website.

My intuition makes me grateful that the FDA is there to protect me — to make sure that every drug is proven both safe and effective — but "protection" kills people.

Last week, I discussed how the FDA kills by keeping useful medical devices off the market. Now, we learn the FDA threatens the health of cigarette smokers who want to quit.

How can I say that? Hasn't the FDA proposed that new warnings and gruesome pictures be placed on cigarette packages because the old scares apparently weren't working? As Reuters reminds us:"

ACSH applauds John Tierney’s column in today’s Science section of The New York Times, in which he argues for the promotion of electronic cigarettes as a harm reduction method to reduce the tremendous toll of smoking in the U.S.

Tierney aptly points out that electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may turn out to be a powerful and safe method of smoking cessation — if the entrenched opposition from government and public health groups fails to stifle the technology before it gains a foothold. E-cigarettes provide users with a dose of aerasolized nicotine — a vapor that does not require burning tobacco. Instead, users inhale the nicotine — the term used is “vaping” — thus avoiding the harmful products of combustion from tobacco smoke. And unlike the “quit or die” approach embraced by many antismoking groups, Tierney points out that e-cigarettes are likely to be an acceptable means of helping the millions of addicted smokers in this country to quit.

“It boggles my mind why there is a bias against e-cigarettes among antismoking groups,” Dr. Siegel said. He added that it made no sense to fret about hypothetical risks from minuscule levels of several chemicals in e-cigarettes when the alternative is known to be deadly: cigarettes containing thousands of chemicals, including dozens of carcinogens and hundreds of toxins.
