Lackluster first quarter earnings reports from the big tobacco companies begin trickling out to their stockholders this month.  Weakening cigarettes sales, hikes in excise taxes, and an increasingly aggressive promotional environment are creating quite a challenge for American cigarette manufacturers.  Profits reports from Lorillard, makers of Newport Cigarettes, suggest a 25 million dollar decrease in profits when compared to last year's first quarter earnings report.

As more and more Americans quit smoking, never start, or make the switch to an alternative like e-cigarettes, the potential market share for big tobacco is ever decreasing, and competition for the remaining market will increase as the companies look for ways to reach the largest amount of consumers.

One strategy emerging in this new economy is to buy out competing products all together and this week we see Lorillard dropping 135 million dollars to purchase a popular Ecig brand in hopes of grabbing a portion of the profits from this ever growing sector of the smoking industry. Once, the big tobacco companies thought of e-cigs as a gadget fad with a short lifespan, but Lorillard's investment proves that the industry giants are taking a closer look at the device's potential for revenue.

It wasn't too long ago that the big tobacco companies were lobbying congress and the FDA to ban Electric cigs outright. Since the loss of that battle; a new competition strategy is a foot; buy a current e-cig company as a going concern and cross market to the reformed (previous) tobacco smokers.  A classic case of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!", further evidence that E cigarettes are a bona fide alternative to tobacco and a real threat to the Big Tobacco companies.

A quick google search these days brings up a lot of repeated stories about a Florida man whose e-cig recently exploded in his mouth, disfiguring the man's face and damaging his home. Of course, news of this event stirred concern for the safety of e cig users around the world. So should you, the White Cloud user worry about the safety of the batteries inside your smokes? The answer is no. There is no need to worry.

What many of the reports that spread from the original AP wire story leave out is the very important fact that the man who was injured had been "garage modding" his e cigarettes. A common practice among tinkerers and denizens of underground internet forums, modding of e cigs breaks most reputable manufacturers warranties. In effect this user was conducting amateur electrical experiments with his batteries to get more life, more juice, more power out of his unbranded bargain components. His last experiment went wrong.

Lately it seems like all the news releases about e cigarettes are disheartening. From the popular TV Docs The Doctors, who named E cigarettes the #9 Health Trend of 2009, to Michael Siegel, MD of the department of community health sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health, a handful of observant experts have noticed the benefits e cigarettes have had on the smokers around them. Dr. Siegel has written that electronic cigarettes, which do not contain tobacco, are much safer than regular cigarettes and points out that they have “comparable toxicity” to current nicotine replacement therapy products, such as the nicotine patch or gum. He goes on to say that they may suppress cravings for cigarettes more successfully than nicotine-replacement products currently on the market because e-cigarettes include smoking-related stimuli. “Although more research is needed …, there is now sufficient evidence to conclude that these products are at least capable of suppressing the urge to smoke.”

Brad Rodu a professor of medicine and endowed chair in tobacco harm reduction research at the University of Louisville has been conducting research in tobacco harm reduction for 15 years has stated, "e-cigarettes are a viable alternative for smokers who wish to reduce the health risks from smoking but who are unable or unwilling to abstain from all nicotine and tobacco. There is absolutely no doubt that inhaling a vapor containing water, nicotine, propylene glycol and flavorings is vastly safer than inhaling the smoke from a burning tobacco product, which contains thousands of toxic agents."

To e cig smokers, many of whom haven't touched a burning tobacco cigarette since they began vaping, this is not news but validation of what they have known since the first time they reached for their e cigs instead of a cigarette. As many experts in the field have pointed out, the risks associated with e-cigs are not yet known, but the risks of continuing to smoke tobacco are many. Why wait?

New public smoking bans in Springfield, Missouri have quietly included smoke-free electronic cigarettes along with the prohibition on regular smoking methods.

This seems rather draconian, given that the bans were created to fight the second-hand smoke pollution that electronic cigarettes do not create. Many e-cig users in the area feel that the inclusion of e-cigarettes into the ban was not fully understood, as the ban was promoted as "smoking" should be banned in public places. Many feel the inclusion of e-cigarettes, while part of the bill from the start, was not clearly communicated to the voting public prior to election day.

Now I'm almost always of the opinion, if someone tells me "there ought to be a law" that there ought not to be that law. As Americans, we are supposed to live in and revel in the freedom a free society allows. The more laws you make restricting that freedom, the less free we all are. I'm sure most vapers out there feel the same way. Many of us started e cig smoking to avoid the regulations and prohibitions on smoking in public and the workplace, as well as to combat the second hand smoke near our loved ones and our own environment. As responsible citizens we are doing the right thing by regulating our own behavior and thus, as our habits do not add to the problems caused by cigarette smoking, should not be subject to the same regulations as cigarette smoking. I imagine enforcement of these new e cir bans will be a problem too, how do you prove I was doing something that leaves no smoke, no butts, no smell, no trace? Isn't there something the police force of Springfield could be doing that is more productive than writing tickets for creating the illusion of second hand smoke?

E cigarette inclusion in this new piece of restrictive legislation is the result of people's misunderstanding of e cigarettes and vaporizing in general.  As the popularity of vaping devices continues to grow, we must educate our friends and co-workers, smokers and non-smokers alike how our choice to vape does not create second hand smoke, or a foul atmosphere, does not yellow up your drapes or leave butts and waste all over the town. We are responsible citizens, so spread the word about the success you've had with e cigs. Others need to know.

Nation, I  got a great new product in the office mail the other day that I wanted to share with you guys: VaporJackets!

VaporJackets are a really cool innovation for the e cigarette user that lets you personalize your e cigs with a great assortment of colorful protective plastic skins they call jackets.

I loved this idea right away because for a long time now, I have tried personalizing my ecigs with markers, spraypaint, stickers and other do-it-yourself methods. I have even bought a few of those expensive e cig "skinz" wrappers from different sites- most of which were glorified stickers that smeared, smudged and eventually peeled away at the corners and collected some weird pocket funk on my batteries.

VaporJackets are something totally different, a high gloss plastic film that shrinks to fit your cigarette when you blow it with a hair dryer or a lighter.  The finish is really glossy and the colors look really flash. The city of Boston is proposing a crackdown on e-cigarette sales and their use in the workplace. Of course, the director of tobacco control used the age old mantra of 'protecting the children' as just cause for the new string of legislation. Along with new regulations for where e-cigarettes can be sold (behind the counter only) new regulations banning e smoking in the workplace would effectively outlaw e cigarettes on restaurant patios, Office landings and loading docks.

When the (original) smoking laws were first enacted here in Florida, it was air quality, second hand smoke and non-smoker's rights that were the reasons for the encroachment on smokers rights. We complied, and those laws swept across the nation changing the nature of bars, bowling alleys and restaurants forever.

Now we smokers have a safe, pollution-free alternative to analogue cigarettes that do not create the second hand smoke that so many non-smokers found offensive and yet in cities like Boston we are being shunned once again. This time however it is because lawmakers fear that the very sight of you enjoying an e cigarette at a restaurant patio could cause a child to travel down the road of nicotine addiction. This time it isn't the smoke in the air they want to clear, its the smokers themselves that they wish would disappear!

FACT: E cigarettes create NO second-hand smoke, and do not foul up the atmosphere of even the coziest coffee house.

These policies have not been finalized yet, a public hearing is scheduled for early October. It is important for e cig smokers, and their supporters, to call and write their respective lawmakers and representatives in Boston, Massachutsetts and the nation to voice your opposition to these reactionary laws, lest they become the norm, like the smoking laws that are already on the books.

I have been into vaping, and ecigarettes for a long time. From early AA battery button mashers and 3 piece drip style erector sets to more advanced 2 piece units in recent years, I have purchased, used or sampled nearly every style of e cigarette on the market.

Like many e cig users on the internet, I found each unit I used had it's quirks and draw backs. The AA Screwdriver that would fire up in my pocket, the three piece that would leak like a fountain pen and ruined two shirts, the charging case shaped like a cigarette pack that never would charge anything...  You say, oh I can live with that, but the quirks and complaints you have for your piece will often compel you to buy a new kit!  Nearly 8 years after my first purchase, I have lost count how many kits I have bought over the years.
